What THCA actually is
THCA is the acidic precursor to THC and it occurs naturally in raw cannabis. In that raw form it is not intoxicating. Applying heat removes a carboxyl group and converts it into delta 9 THC, which is intoxicating. That conversion is called decarboxylation and it is what happens when cannabis is smoked, vaped or baked.
So THCA flower works because you set fire to it. The heat does the conversion in real time.
Why THCA in a gummy is a strange proposition
A gummy is not heated before you eat it. If a gummy genuinely contains THCA and nothing else, eating it should produce very little effect, because there is no decarboxylation step.
So a THCA gummy that actually works is doing one of two things. Either it was decarboxylated during manufacture, in which case what you are eating is delta 9 THC and the THCA label describes what went in rather than what comes out. Or it contains other active cannabinoids alongside the THCA, and those are doing the work.

The legal angle, and why the label exists
The reason you see THCA on labels at all is regulatory rather than pharmacological. Hemp rules in the United States have generally been written around delta 9 THC content by dry weight, and THCA is a different molecule on paper. That has been used as a compliance argument for products that become intoxicating once heated.
That position is contested and the rules are moving. Several states have closed it explicitly, and federal changes have been debated repeatedly. Treat any claim that a THCA product is legal everywhere with real scepticism, and check your own state. Our legality guide covers the state picture.
